Mads Emil Dreyer: Disappearer

This February, composer Mads Emil Dreyer is releasing his debut album Disappearer with Dacapo Records! Join us and listen to an innovative new voice in Danish music, when the ensemble NEKO3 and flutist Michaela Hansen together with Dreyer himself is performing the four works from the album.

In his works, Mads Emil Dreyer is combining acoustic instruments with live electronics. The music is created in the moment when Dreyers himself is live-sampling the sounds of the acoustic instruments, closely interlacing the two sound sources and blurring the boundaries between acoustic and electronic sound. The result is a calm and minimalistic music, which we’re excited to experience the beautiful Koncertkirken.

The concert is approximately one hour long and admission is free. After the concert, Dacapo Records offers a glass of wine.

Disappearer will be released on all streaming services 2 February and as a limited edition vinyl

The release is generously supported by Dansk Musiker Forbund, Dansk Artist Forbund, Sonning-Fonden, KODA’s Udgivelsespulje, Solistforeningen and Solistforbundet.

NEKO3’s work is not limited to the simple conception of a given program, but extends to the meaningful work of research and development in collaboration with the composers, trying to inspire them and integrating them to the central features of the work of the ensemble. "NEKO3 x Light" features light as its central theme and medium, with works by both younger and more established composers, in order to illuminate the new currents of the new music scene via an international perspective. Stylistically, the works point in many directions, but overall form a good picture of the great diversity of new compositional music.

NEKO3 x 'stay with me'

For the Ekkozone Offbeats festival NEKO3 presents two concerts of varied program by modern-day composers, both works written specifically for the ensemble and others worked on in close collaboration with their creators. The focus has been laid on the composer and the ensemble functioning as a unity, blending artistic research with a profound interest in inter-human connections. Such is the uniting theme - up close and personal. Over the two concerts the ensemble will be met with a variety of multimedia effects like visual art, game engines, lights and electronics. Apart from Alexander Schubert's 'vertex hand' as the repertorial uniting factor of the two concerts, works will be presented by Marcela Lucatelli and Xavier Bonfill

About Xavier Bonfill

Xavier Bonfill is a Catalan composer and performer living in Copenhagen. His artistic output encompasses works for traditional instruments, electronics, video and other multimedia formats such as interactive websites and apps. In his works, a form of dialogue between different media and art forms is created between text, images, acoustic and electronic sound. Duality, opposition and even contradiction are a characteristic of his aesthetics: where the poetic is set against the immediately superficial, the extravagant against the intimate, the crooked against the naive.

About Marcela Lucatelli

Marcela Lucatelli can already be hailed as one of the most innovative vocalists and composers of her generation. Born in Brazil and based in Denmark, Marcela has earned international recognition for her extremely original, sensuous and politically charged performance works. Her works have been premiered at diverse festivals and international events such as Donaueschinger Musiktage, Darmstadt Internationale Ferienkurse für Neue Musik, Nordic Music Days, KLANG, Copenhagen Jazz Festival and All Ears Festival for Improvised Music.

About Alexander Schubert

Alexander Schubert studied bioinformatics, multimedia composition. He’s a professor at the Musikhochschule Hamburg. Schubert’s interest explores the border between the acoustic and electronic world. In music composition, immersive installation and staged pieces he examines the interplay between the digital and the analogue. He creates pieces that realize test settings or interaction spaces that question modes of perception and representation. Continuing topics in this field are authenticity and virtuality. The influence and framing of digital media on aesthetic views and communication is researched in a post-digital perspective. Recent research topics in his works were virtual reality, artificial intelligence and online-mediated artworks. Schubert is a founding member of ensembles such as “Decoder“.  His works have been performed more than 700 times in the last few years by numerous ensembles in over 30 countries.

In order to be able to keep a fresh mind and to think ahead and build a better connection with younger composers and artists, we introduce a new concept for our recently-established NEKO.Lab initiative: micro-workshops. Our fourth micro-workshop takes place on 15.-16.9. and features the American composer Connor McLean.

******************************************

Info about NEKO.Lab : micro-workshops
Each year our micro-workshops will feature a diverse, equality-respecting collection of young composers mainly still in the midst of their studies. Each workshop lasts for 2 days and circles around a micro-piece of 3-5min in duration, or a draft. It can be a technique or an idea for which the composer simply needs musicians, or a draft of a piece specifically written for our ensemble and has potential to become an “actual” commission in the future. The composer will submit a score/draft slightly before the first session and will then work it privately with us on the first day. The second workshop day will be a session open to the public (physically and via social media channels) to have a closer look at the process. At the end of the second day we will perform the result to the audience. The performance will be arranged like a pop-up concert and repeated multiple times during a time frame of a couple of hours so that people can walk in and catch the performance as many times as they want. Based on our experience in working with composers over the past few years we have come to the realisation that the active participation of musicians in the creative process is of high importance for composers. Throughout the process composers will carry many of their doubts with them, and each process will differ from the conception to the actual realisation. But if it was that the composers and performers were open to engage in a dialogue throughout the process and conduct preliminary experiments with some ideas, occasionally accepting that some ideas do not work would be much easier. The composers would be encouraged to find solutions and improvements in an early stage of the composition which would greatly benefit the future work, whereas the musicians would gain a whole different understanding about the work and its ideas and would thus be able to perform and work on it on a higher, personal level. We would like to extend our gratitude towards to the Danish Composers' Society for supporting this initiative.

NEKO3 has out together a varied program consisting of six pieces written by a series of current composers specifically for NEKO3. Put together the six pieces become a versatile portrait of NEKO3 as an ensemble, as artists, and as human beings. A family portrait anno 2021.

The first half of the program goes straight to the point – up close and personal. The pieces are almost entirely without the use of instruments – just a meeting with the three musicians Fei, Lorenzo and Kalle as human beings; their look, their personality, their perspectives, their feelings put in front of us on stage.

Second half is more abstract however still a portrait. Now focusing on NEKO3 as a unity, showcasing the artistic research and interests of the ensemble. Here we will be met with a variety of multimedia effects like 3D-projections, engines, light and electronic elements.

18th August 14:00 - 17:00 LIVE on NEKO3 YouTube Channel

In order to be able to keep a fresh mind and to think ahead and build a better connection with younger composers and artists, we introduce a new concept for our recently-established NEKO.Lab initiative: micro-workshops. Our micro-workshop #3 takes place on 17.-18.8. and features the Danish composer and violinist Sofie Meyer. She is currently pursuing her masters degree in composition at the Estonian Academy for Music and Theatre under the guidance of Helena Tulve. She has participated in master classes with teachers such as Toshio Hosokawa, Chaya Czernowin and Jānis Petraškevičs. Her works have been performed in various festivals such as Muriad Festival, Commute Festival and the Latvian Music Festival. She is active as an improviser and performer of new music as well as a keen player of traditional music.

“During the micro-workshop I would like to work with distortion in different ways. The sketch is created with gradual and slow transformations off distortion exploring sound synthesis. The sketch is a continuation of a piece of mine called “Which seemed, when dreamed, to mean so profoundly much”. My wish is to prolong the piece into a longer form. When writing it I had the wish to work with substances of sounds. Sound itself being a source of arrival and departure of both the physicality of things and off the utopian dreaming world.

The title I found in Sylvia Plath’s poem ‘The Ghost’s leavetaking’.
‘Enter the chilly no-man's land of precisely
Five o'clock in the morning, the no-color void
Where the waking head rubbishes out the draggled lot
Of sulfurous dreamscapes and obscure lunar conundrums
Which seemed, when dreamed, to mean so profoundly much’

(excerpt from the poem)

Also should be mentioned that the sketch encompasses ideas as well as instructions on how to play. The ideas are marked in pink and these are meant to be played as experiments during the workshop.”

Video recording of the concert : NEKO3 x LIGHT

The event will be held online via Zoom:
https://zoom.us/j/6471141501...

NEKO3 presents a concert with light as its central theme and medium.
The program includes works by young, forward-thinking composers Xavier Bonfill, Remy Siu and the ensemble's own Mads Emil Dreyer, as well as more established names Simon Løffler and Juliana Hodkinson.
With this mix, NEKO3 wants to illuminate the new currents of the new music scene via an international perspective. Stylistically, the works point in many directions, but overall they form a good picture of the great diversity of new compositional music.

NEKO3:
Fei Nie | Kalle Hakosalo | Lorenzo Colombo

Composers:
Remy Siu | Simon Løffler | Juliana Hodkinson | Mads Emil Dreyer | Xavier Bonfill

In order to be able to keep a fresh mind and to think ahead and build a better connection with younger composers and artists, we introduce a new concept for our recently-established NEKO.Lab initiative: micro-workshops.

Our second micro-workshop takes place on 31.5-1.6. and features composer Athanasia Kotronia. Athanasia is a composer working with intimate and tactile sounds. The focus of the workshop will be on combining electronic sounds, recordings, singing and playing - to use electronics as an instrument and find a middle room for real life recordings and acoustic sound to meet. ”I wanted to bring something rhythmic, jazzy and fun to this workshop while also exploring to work with a more restricted way to structure a composition.”

NEKO3 / Elektronik & Lys @ Klang 2021

PROGRAM
Yeabon Jo : Boundary point
Juliana Hodkinson: THRESH (2018/2021)

CAGE & STOCKHAUSEN + NEKO3 & friends

IMG_7482.jpeg

Moderne Mandag concert with two avant-garde classics that are among the most significant and influential of the 20th century - with almost iconic status. Not only in the classical music environments, but also top names in rock, pop and jazz have referred to them as sources of inspiration. Several Danish composers continue to be indebted to the two composers, who had both been obvious candidates for the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. Gunnar Berg knew both composers personally, he met John Cage as the first Dane in 1949 in Paris, Stockhausen in 1952 in Darmstadt. The two works represent important shifts in the musical composers' musical thinking - away from a writing style that was particularly dominant in early Stockhausen, where everything is regulated by well-organized, complex systems that were increasingly perceived as lock-in, in favor of a simpler, more intuitive and spontaneous way based on random principles, characterized by Indian philosophy, Zen Buddhism and the Chinese I Ching (Book of Transformations). Stockhausen's Procession has only been performed in Denmark once, on 1 June 1967 by Gruppe Stockhausen on a major tour from Helsinki via Stockholm, Oslo, Bergen, Copenhagen and London to the international holiday courses in Darmstadt. John Cage's work is a Danish premiere.
